Football turf cost in India (2026): per sq ft, 5-a-side, 7-a-side and full pitch

Short answer. A 5-a-side football turf ground costs about ₹16 to ₹31 lakh all-in. A 7-a-side runs ₹28 to ₹46 lakh. A full-size pitch starts around ₹1.4 crore.

Turf, infill and base together come to ₹150 to ₹250 per sq ft. Add fencing and floodlights and a finished small-sided ground lands at ₹200 to ₹380 per sq ft. Where you sit in that band depends on three things: the yarn weight you choose, the condition of your land, and how much light you want at night.

Small-sided football has become one of the most dependable sports assets a landowner in India can build. Walk past any floodlit 5-a-side ground in a tier-one or tier-two city after seven in the evening and the slots are booked back to back. The economics are simple. A well-placed ground charges by the hour, runs late into the night, and asks for very little once it is built.

So the question every first-time builder asks is the same. What does a football turf actually cost, and what decides where your number lands? This guide answers it in rupees per square foot and rupees per project, with the cost drivers most first quotes leave out.

The per sq ft breakdown.

A football turf is not grass rolled onto mud. It is a layered build, and each layer carries its own rate. The playing area is priced per square foot. Fencing and lighting are priced per project, because they scale with the perimeter and the number of masts, not the area.

ComponentRateWhat it covers
Artificial turf carpet, 50 mm pile₹60 to ₹90 / sq ftThe monofilament polyethylene surface players run on. Rate moves with dtex, backing and certification.
Infill, silica sand + SBR rubber₹10 to ₹30 / sq ftSand ballasts the fibres upright, rubber gives cushioning and ball behaviour. Depth decides the rate.
Base preparation₹80 to ₹130 / sq ftExcavation, grading to falls, compacted aggregate sub-base, drainage and edging. Land condition decides the rate.
Perimeter fencing and ball-stop nets₹1 to ₹3 lakhGalvanised posts, chain-link and 6 m netting for a small-sided ground. Scales with perimeter length.
LED floodlights₹3 to ₹8 lakhMasts, fixtures and wiring for night play on a small-sided ground. Quality and lux level decide the rate.

Two numbers anchor everything. The turf itself sits between ₹60 and ₹90 per sq ft depending on the tier, and the base swings from ₹80 to ₹130 depending entirely on your land. Add infill and the installed playing surface comes to ₹150 to ₹250 per sq ft. Fencing and lights sit on top as fixed costs, which is why they hurt a small ground more, per square foot, than a large one.

Turf price by dtex tier.

Most cost guides quote a single turf rate. That hides the decision that matters most. Dtex is the weight in grams of 10,000 metres of yarn. Heavier yarn means a denser, more resilient blade that survives more hours of studs. It also costs more per square foot, and it lasts longer, so the cheapest tier is rarely the cheapest over the life of the ground.

5-a-side turf cost: 6,000 to 10,000 sq ft.

The 5-a-side is the workhorse of Indian small-sided football and the format most first-time operators build. A standard playing area is around 25 by 16 metres. With run-off margins the carpeted zone lands between 6,000 and 10,000 sq ft. This size is the sweet spot: big enough for a proper game, small enough that the hourly rate stays affordable and bookings stay frequent.

Worked example: 8,000 sq ft, 14K Performance turf, average land

Turf, 14,000 dtex at ₹72₹5.8 lakh
Infill at ₹18₹1.4 lakh
Base preparation at ₹100₹8.0 lakh
Fencing and nets₹2.0 lakh
LED floodlights₹5.0 lakh
All-in₹22.2 lakh

That is a well-specified ground on land that needs normal grading. A tighter specification on firm, flat land brings it to about ₹16 lakh. An 18K carpet, a deep base on soft ground and a six-mast lighting array push it toward ₹31 lakh. This is the most popular budget tier in the country and the one most likely to pay back quickly.

7-a-side turf cost: 12,000 to 16,000 sq ft.

The 7-a-side is the step up for operators who want bigger games, more players per booking and the ability to host small tournaments. The playing area runs 12,000 to 16,000 sq ft. Turf, infill and base scale with area, so they roughly double. Fencing and lighting rise more gently because the same masts now cover a larger footprint.

Worked example: 14,000 sq ft, 14K Performance turf, average land

Turf, 14,000 dtex at ₹72₹10.1 lakh
Infill at ₹18₹2.5 lakh
Base preparation at ₹100₹14.0 lakh
Fencing and nets₹3.0 lakh
LED floodlights₹7.0 lakh
All-in₹36.6 lakh

An all-in 7-a-side lands between ₹28 and ₹46 lakh. The larger area lets you charge a higher hourly rate and sell more player slots per booking, which keeps payback competitive with the smaller format.

Full pitch cost: 75,000 sq ft and up.

A full-size ground is a different scale of project, usually built by clubs, schools, townships or serious multi-court operators. A FIFA-dimension field with run-offs covers 75,000 to 90,000 sq ft. At that size the per-sq-ft rates compound into a serious number, and the lighting changes character: four or six tall masts at competition lux rather than the pole lights of a small-sided ground.

Worked example: 80,000 sq ft, 16K Pro turf, average land

Turf, 16,000 dtex at ₹80₹64 lakh
Infill at ₹18₹14 lakh
Base preparation at ₹100₹80 lakh
Fencing and nets₹5 lakh
Mast floodlights, competition lux₹20 lakh
All-in₹1.83 crore

A full pitch commonly runs from ₹1.4 crore upward. For most operators chasing rental income it is rarely the right first build. The capital is large, the hourly rate cannot rise in proportion to the area, and one big booking is harder to fill every night than several small slots. Many operators split a large plot into multiple 5-a-side or 7-a-side courts instead. Where certification matters, for academies or competition venues, the full field is justified, and that is where FIFA Quality Pro systems earn their place.

Cost drivers nobody puts in the first quote.

Two quotes for the same size of ground can differ by lakhs. The reason is almost always one of these.

  • Land condition. The single biggest swing. Flat, firm, well-graded land needs the minimum. Soft, sloped or waterlogged land pushes base preparation to the ₹130 end with extra cut, fill and compaction.
  • Drainage design. Monsoon makes runoff non-negotiable. A graded sub-base with perimeter or herringbone drains costs more upfront and keeps the ground playable within minutes of heavy rain, which protects every booking you would otherwise lose.
  • Turf specification. Dtex, pile height, stitch density, backing and UV treatment all move the rate within the ₹60 to ₹90 band. A cheaper carpet wears out years sooner, so the lowest turf quote is frequently the most expensive choice over the life of the asset.
  • Lighting quality. Cheap floodlights flicker, throw shadows and irritate paying players. A quality LED array costs more of the ₹3 to ₹8 lakh range and directly protects your most profitable night-time slots.
  • Certification. FIFA Quality and FIFA Quality Pro systems are lab tested for shock absorption, ball roll and rotational resistance. Certification adds cost and lowers long-term liability, which matters for academies and for your reputation.

The honest takeaway is that the cheapest build almost never wins. Skimping on the base, the drainage or the yarn simply moves the cost forward into early repairs and lost bookings. Spend where it protects revenue.

How long it takes to build.

FormatBase worksTurf, infill, linesTypical total
5-a-side6 to 8 days4 to 5 days2 weeks
7-a-side10 to 12 days6 to 8 days3 weeks
Full pitch3 to 4 weeks2 to 3 weeks5 to 7 weeks

All of these assume clear weather. Base works stop in rain, so the practical window in most of India is October to May, and pre-monsoon slots fill early.

Running cost after the build.

An artificial pitch asks very little once built, but low is not zero. Brushing keeps the fibres upright and redistributes infill. Sand and rubber migrate with heavy play and need periodic top-ups. Drains want flushing before monsoon. Seams and line markings want an annual inspection. Budget a modest monthly figure and the ground reaches the upper end of its service life. Against the hourly income it generates, maintenance is a rounding error, which is the whole point of choosing a synthetic surface. The full routine is in keeping a pitch playable.

Questions, asked often.

How much does it cost to make a football turf in India?

A 5-a-side ground of around 8,000 sq ft costs ₹16 to ₹31 lakh all-in, covering turf, base, infill, fencing and lights. A 7-a-side runs ₹28 to ₹46 lakh. A full-size field starts around ₹1.4 crore. Land condition and the dtex tier you choose decide where you land in each band.

How much is 1 sq ft of football turf?

The turf carpet alone costs ₹60 to ₹90 per sq ft for a football-grade 50 mm pile, depending on the dtex tier. With infill and base preparation the installed playing surface comes to ₹150 to ₹250 per sq ft, before fencing and floodlights.

What is the price of turf per square metre?

One square metre is about 10.76 sq ft, so a turf rate of ₹72 per sq ft works out to roughly ₹775 per square metre for the carpet alone. Installed with infill and base, expect ₹1,600 to ₹2,700 per square metre.

Which dtex should I choose?

12K for recreation and rental with light to medium use. 14K for schools and academies training daily. 16K for clubs and tournament play with full-contact, full-season loads. 18K where broadcast standard and FIFA Quality Pro certification are required. Choose by how hard the ground will be played, not by the biggest number.

Does the price include the base?

Not always, and this is the most common gap between quotes. A proper base is ₹80 to ₹130 per sq ft, often more than the turf itself. Ask every supplier to show base preparation, drainage and edging as separate lines.

Is a football turf a good business investment?

In a location with genuine demand, yes. At ₹800 to ₹1,500 per hour and five or more filled slots a night, a 5-a-side ground often returns its build cost within about a year. The main risk is location, not the surface. See the turf business guide for the full payback maths.

How long does a football turf last?

A 12K carpet gives 5 to 7 years of heavy use. 14K and 18K systems give 8 to 10 years on a maintained pitch. The sub-base lasts far longer, so a second carpet on the same base is much cheaper than the first build.

Can turf be laid on my existing ground?

Not on natural grass. Roots and organic matter grow through and the ground stays soft. Turf needs a compacted aggregate base with drainage. Smaller grounds can go on existing concrete if it has the right falls and is level.
